Active Observer Delegation to Palestine
From 29 March - 10 April 2002 a PSC delegation will be joining
the International Solidarity Campaign (ISC) who will be coordinating
two weeks of direct nonviolent actions designed to expose
and confront the human rights abuses by the Israeli Occupying
Forces in the West Bank, Palestine.
Concerned people from Britain who are committed to justice
are being asked to bring their energy, commitment, hope and
action to support the Palestinian struggle for freedom.
International support has proven to be very effective in
the last year . When international demonstrators stand together
with Palestinian demonstrators the Israeli military has difficulty
using its regular tactic of shooting live ammunition at the
crowds. As the terror and violence of the occupation increases
on a daily basis it is essential that more internationals
come and show their solidarity with the Palestinian people
and help support nonviolent means of bringing down the occupation.
If you are interested in joining the PSC delegation - email
info@palestinecampaign.org or call 020 7700 6192
Please join us the presence of internationals will
give heart and support to the very important nonviolent resistance
to the illegal occupation of Palestine

LECTURE : Israeli youth refuses to join
army that "takes
part in acts of oppression against the Palestinian people"
19-year-old Israeli concientious objector visits University
of Toronto on speaking tour - Local Toronto video artist contextualizes
resistance with images of recent protests in Israel.
Nineteen-year-old Matan Kaminer will be addressing a Toronto
audience at the University of Toronto about his decision to
join a growing group of Israeli concientious objectors who
have stated they will not serve in the Occupied Territories
of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Kaminer is among 62 high school senior students who addressed
a letter in September of 2001 to Israeli PM Ariel Sharon expressing
their refusal to take part in the execution of Israeli Defence
Force policies in the Occupied Territories. Referring to themselves
as "youths who grew up and were brought up in Israel,"
the group states that they will "refuse to take part
in acts of oppression against the Palestinian people."
Widely termed the "Senior Students' Letter" in
the Israeli media, the students' petition to Sharon is part
of a growing Concientious Objectors' movement in Israel. In
January, 53 soldiers placed an advertisement in the popular
Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz stating that although they were
willing to serve in the army, they would not fight in the
Occupied Territories.
The soldiers outlined their objections to the Occupation,
concluding:
"We will not continue to fight beyond the Green Line
[Israel's pre-'67 border] for the purpose of dominating, expelling,
starving and humiliating an entire people." Since then,
the number of signers of the refusal letter has grown to nearly
300.
Kaminer will discuss both his personal experiences as an
Israeli teenager about to be called up to serve in the Israeli
Defence Forces and the role of the Senior Students' Letter
in the broader peace movement in Israel.
Kaminer's military service has been postponed by one year
while he volunteers in a non-profit organization promoting
dialogue between Jewish and Arab youth. Next year, Kaminer
has stated he will refuse to be drafted, an action that could
result in imprisonment. To date, Israel has jailed over 600
reserve soldiers, with at least 2,500 reservists who have
gone absent without leave.
Also on the bill for March 12th is B. H. Yael, Associate
Professor at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She will
be screening footage she took of specific actions that occurred
in the last days of 2001, contextualizing Kaminer's refusal
within a larger atmosphere of opposition to the Occupation,
both domestic and international. Documentation includes images
of marches organized by groups such as Women in Black, of
Settler occupied Hebron and of actions and protests supported
by Internationals.
This event is sponsored and supported by Jewish
Youth Against The Occupation, Coalition for a Just Peace in
Palestine and Israel, Jewish Women's Committee to End the
Occupation, Near East Cultural & Educational Foundation,
Science for Peace, Arab Students Association at U of T, Yosher
(Jewish Network for Social Justice), Peace and Social Action
Committee of Toronto Friends Meeting, Hart House Interfaith
Dialogue Committee, Canadian Friends of Sabeel, Campaign to

Kaminer's visit is sponsored by the May Anti-War Conference,

Institute, Palestinian and Jewish Unity, and Jewish Alliance
Against the Occupation.
