BOYCOTT ISRAEL CAMPAIGN

Sporting equipment banned to Israel

IRIB News (Iran)
17 June 2002

London, June 17 - The UK's hypocrisy in refusing to impose an arms embargo against Israel was exposed Monday when the government was reported to have blocked the sale of sporting equipment to the Zionist regime.

British ministers have repeatedly rejected calls from MPs and peace campaigners to stop supplying military goods to Israel in line with government guidelines not to supply arms when there is a risk that they might be used against civilians or exacerbat e conflict.

But according to the Daily Telegraph, the department of trade and industry (DTI) has refused to grant an export licence for 350,000 round of calibre.22 cartridges to the Israeli shooting team.

"There is a clear risk that the ammunition might be used for internal repression, external aggression, prolonging the conflict," the DTI was reported to have told Eley of Birmingham, the manufacturers of the cartridges used by most shooting teams.
