[Boycott - Israel Supporters]

Comment:

Two entries from the research blog of Corporate Watch exposing corporate complicity in the Occupation of Palestine.

Most BDS activists do not have access to the settlements. This makes this type of accurate 'on the ground' research 'gold dust' for the BDS movement - the seeds for future campaigns against the guilty companies.

Evidence of British company Lee Cooper trading in illegal Israeli settlement

Corporate Watch
15 March 2010

The other day we took a trip to to the settlement Ma’ale Adumim in search of signs of dodgy business dealings -and, for the first time, we found a British company trading directly in a settlement. Lee Cooper, a British denim company established in 1908, were joined by the international businesses Western Union, Dr Fischer and a Tower Records franchise in their willingness to make a profit out of the occupation.

Adumim Mall

Ma’ale Adumim is the third largest settlement in the West Bank. Established in 1976, it now has a population of around 35,000 and is rapidly growing. The settlement is at the heart of the controversial E1 project, which aims to cut the West Bank off from East Jerusalem and to facilitate further settlement expansion. Ma’ale Adumim was established on land stolen from the five Palestinian villages of Abu Dis, Al Izriyyeh, Al Issawiyyeh and Anata. Just like Mishor Adumim, the industrial zone connected to the settlement (see http://www.corporatewatch.org/?lid=3477), Ma’ale Adumim has also confiscated land from the Jahalin Bedouin, who are now forced to live on the outskirts of the industrial area.

Lee Cooper in Ma’ale Adumim

Earlier this year, Ma’ale Adumim made the news when it was revealed that the London based business man, Tory party donor and charman of BICOM (Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre) Poju Zabludowicz has a stake in the Ma’ale Adumim shopping centre.

Lee Cooper, who have a shop based in the Adumim Mall and whose headquarters are in London, has a long history of work wear production and supplied the British Ministry of Defence during both World Wars. After the second World War their production changed to the manufacture of Jeans. Their Hebrew blog is headed by a Union Jack next to the slogan “For a civilized world”. They also appear to be associated with the London night club Fabric, which is advertised on their Israeli site as a suitable holiday destination for Israeli Lee Cooper wearers (http://www.leecooper.co.il/blog.html).

Businesses in Bnei Yehuda Settlement

Corporate Watch
12 March 2010

Bnei Yehuda settlement was established in 1972 after Israel’s occupation of the Golan heights, it was reportedly set up by workers from Israeli Aircraft Industries (www.iai.co.il). It is on the site of the Syrian area of Scopia which was depopulated when the Israeli military forced most of the Syrian residents of the Golan Heights out of their homes. It now has 1036 residents.

Carmel Agrexco packing house in Bnei Yehuda

Bnei Yehuda boasts a Carmel Agrexco packing house. Agrexco are the largest exporter of fresh produce from the settlements to Europe and elsewhere.

On the road leading to Bnei Yehuda a factory bearing the Elbit logo can be seen. The factory appears to be manufacturing aircraft. Elbit operate in the UK and are involved in testing unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) at ParcAberporth in Wales (see http://www.corporatewatch.org/?lid=3470).

Sign offering free land for settlers in Bnei Yehuda

Near the entrance to Bnei Yehuda industrial area is a sign offering free land to people who want to settle, on the expropriated Syrian land, in Bnei Yehuda.

"In the eyes of my lawyers I was kidnapped, and disappeared from life to reappear [3 years later] in a wheelchair with three ribs broken and needed badly 20 bottles of blood to survive.. In a room 6 feet by 9 feet they put me under their feet with my hands handcuffed at the back, naked - completely. 15 officers of the police were there, and they made my body black with blood. they tried to extract a false confession from me.. 5 times I fell unconscious, and I was bleeding by the nose and by the mouth. No one knew where I was, yet the Almighty he knew, and he expressed his assistance in the form of this commission [the IHRC].."
