Alert: Emergency protest in solidarity with Palestinian hunger -strikers Hassan Safadi and Samer al-Barq
18 August 2012
A Palestinian prisoners campaign group was formed at the Al Quds Rally in London on 17th August 2012, and as its first action it has called for an emergency demonstration on Saturday 18th August outside the Israeli Embassy in Kensington High Street at 3-5pm in support of Palestinian prisoners Hassan Safadi and Samer al-Barq who are both in critical condition.
Both men have been imprisoned under Israel's infamous 'administrative detention' which means they have not been charged with anything and there is no trial and yet they have been locked up indefinitely on a rolling 6 month prison sentence.
Hassan Safadi and Samer al-Barq are both on renewed hunger strikes after Israel broke its deal to release them. They had previously already been on hungerstike for 70 and 50 days. Now Sameer has been on a renewed hunger strike from May 22 - that's nearly three months, and Hassan for nearly two months.
Both men are in critical condition, barely able to stand and use wheelchairs for their daily needs. Amnesty has reported that even at the Medical Centre of the Israel Prison Service Samer and Hassan are being repeatedly beaten and abused.
The latest news we just received two days ago (on Thursday 16th August) is that the prison guards have once again attacked Hassan and Samer smashing Hassans head on the iron doors of the cell repeatedly until he was unconscious on the floor, they then dragged both prisoners to an isolation cell without any mattresses. To protest this inhuman and degrading treatment Hassan Safadi has announced that he will no longer be drinking water.
Due to the urgency of this case we will be holding a vigil for Samer and Hassan tomorrow afternoon from 3pm to 5 pm outside Israeli embassy in Kensington high street.

"The United States is 4.6% of the worlds people but still controls 50% of the worlds wealth and has a military that spends more than every other country in the world combined. I see this moment, as a moment that is very dangerous.. which is to say that the United States is a declining world economic power, similarly a declining political power, but what isn't declining is the military power. As you know from the 20th century that's a dangerous combination - a declining economic and political power but an overwhelmingly dominant military power. I think the national security state that we've seen organised since 9-11 in an unbelievably rapid way, which owes in no small part to Israel I must say, is a particular [example]."
