End Gaza Slaughter

London Demo 28 December 2008

On 27th December Israel started its genocidal bombing of Gaza, with in a few hours over 250 people had been slaughtered. An emergency demonstration was arranged for the next day at 2pm outside the Israeli Embassy in Kensington. Being called at such short notice the police assumed only a few dozen people would turn up and set up a small holding pen for them, far away from the Israeli embassy on the other side of the street. Thousands turned up, all the streets approaching the embassy were full of protesters, it was only a matter of time before the holding pen would burst open.

Thousands of demonstrators in the holding pen..

Its all about eliminating the Palestinian peoples choice - their elected Hamas government..

In the end it was the throwing of a single shoe by a lone demonstrator at the iron gates of the embassy approach and the subsequent over reaction by the police - four of them jumping on him, that ignited the keg which broke the holding pen. Hundreds of demonstrators broke through the barricade and came to his defense. The police panicked and drew their steel truncheons.

If injustice becomes law.. resistance becomes duty
Stop Gaza Slaughter
Barbarism has a face - America and Israel

The shoe and the flag..

It was no use, the people could not be contained - they had crossed the road and reached the gates of the embassy approach. One brave demonstrator climbed the embassy gates and nearly succeeded. Another poured red liquid symbolizing Palestinian blood across the paving stones outside the embassy gates.

Out of the police pen.. and at the embassy gates

Stop Gaza Holocaust..

Short speeches were given by Ismael Patel (Friends of Al-Aqsa), Yvonne Ridley (Peace Activist), and George Galloway (Respect MP).

Yvonne Ridley revealed that "I was given this Palestinian passport by Ismail Haniyeh. Ismail Haniyeh said to me 'You are now a Palestinian citizen'. I said to him 'At last I have a Prime Minister of whom I can be proud!' Today we are all Palestinians.."

Police were using unnecessary force to push people away from the embassy gates and they formed two police lines blocking Kensington High Street preventing people coming from the tube station from reaching the demonstration. Half a dozen attack dogs were used to intimidate the demonstrators not to break the police lines. Police spy helicopter stayed overhead for over two hours.

Stop starving the Palestinians

Whose side are you on?

When the people responded with a sit down protest the police charged them with no regard for women, children or the elderly. When that didn't work they called reinforcements and started getting very heavy handed. People responded with chants of 'Shame on you!' Police started arresting anyone they could grab, dragging them violently to the police vans.

The demo ended after sunset with many Muslim performing their prayers on the street.
