Ebru Özkan with feet and hands shackled by chains, dragged to an illegal military court by usurping occupiers to face fabricated charges..

On Sunday 8th July 2018 27 years old Turkish citizen Ebru Ozkan was dragged to an illegal Israeli military court with her hands and feet bound in metal shackles. Despite the indignity, she smiled defiantly as the fourth strongest military in the world charged her of 'threatening Israel’s security' by bringing 5 bottles of perfume (in 2016), a phone charger and $500 into Israel. The beneficiaries of these items, it is alleged, apparently had links to Hamas. This is the best Israel's secret police Shin Bet could come up with after interrogating Ebru Ozkan for nearly a month. Despite her asking for a Turkish translator the interrogations were conducted in Arabic which she does not know well and the transcript she was forced to sign was in Hebrew which she does not understand at all.

Ebru Ozkan has not been allowed to speak to her family since her arrest on 11th June 2018 and the first time her lawyer saw her was during court proceedings. Ebru Ozkan had come to Jerusalem on a 4 day holiday with a tour group to visit to Al Alqsa Mosque during Laylat al Qadr (on the final days of Ramadan). She was arrested whist boarding her plane to return home.

At the hearing on Monday 9th July, conditional bail was set upon payment of a ransom of 15,000 shekels ( £3,117), confiscation of her passport and having to attend a police station twice a week. But bail is conditional upon the prosecution agreeing, they have till 5pm Tuesday to appeal the verdict. In the meantime Ebru Ozkan is still languishing in an Israel dungeon.

Following widespread condemnation, both in local protests in Turkey and international protests in London, of the Turkish governments inaction in securing her release, a member from the Turkish embassy did attend the hearings on Sunday and Monday (something that did not happen during the initial hearings).

Imninds chair Abbas Ali said "After a month of interrogation, and we all know that's often euphemism for torture, all Israel has on Ebru Ozkan is she brought 5 bottles of perfume two 2 years ago, a mobile charger which she took back home, and $500 she was given by a friend for their family in the West Bank. To spin that as money laundering for terrorism is ridiculous even for Israel. Clearly Israel's persecution of Ebru Ozkan is a sign of Israel's weakness and paranoid fear of its inevitable end. We have to fight this injustice and campaign for Ebru Ozkan's release. The best pressure point to affect her release is the Turkish government, which has joint cooperation agreement deals with Israel in practically every field from military, economics, to theft of Palestinian natural gas.. Turkey only has to hint at Ebru Ozkan's incarceration impacting one of those deals to secure her release."

"[Deportation at the airport] We saw the injured [Turkish] men going through.. a lot had a leg cut out of their trousers or an arm cut out of their top. It had been cut out to treat their wounds.. they were covered in blood, blood that had been there for three days, and some of them had wounds that were still bleeding.. What upset me most was seeing the dozen men, one after another, hobbling across the terminal, with a bandaged foot. I couldn't ask them why so many of them had a bandaged foot, I couldn't ask them what had happened, because if they spoke or if any of us spoke to them the Israelis beat the injured person.. We later found out that they had these injuries on the tops of their feet from when the troops came down from the helicopter on the Mavi Marmara, and they came down firing - they had been shot from above. Some of the men that were killed were shot at close range - head and chest, but a dozen of the men who were shot, among 59 people who were shot, they were shot at the tops of their feet - the bullets were coming down.. They weren't given a wheelchair or a pair of crutches, and if any of the other passengers stood up and tried to offer [help].. that person was dragged away and smacked by these Israelis. The Israeli soldiers sat on the floor, laughed and sniggered and made every one of these Turkish men hobble and hop all the way across, some 200 metres, everyone of them, one by one, made to do that purely for the sick amusement of the Israeli soldiers."
